Battery Safety For Vapers

The most common battery size is 18650. If you are using a single battery mod it is okay to charge it in the mod if you have to. If you are traveling, or out and about it, is safe to charge a single battery mod using the mod itself and a charging cord, but this is still not recommended. The most common mods today use dual 18650 batteries. Even though the manufacturer says their mod is capable of charging the batteries using the mod and cable, do not EVER charge them in the mod. Almost every manufacturer says it’s not recommended to charge batteries in any mod. The same goes for any mod that uses three batteries. Take the batteries out and charge them in a battery charger. When using a single battery mod it’s safe to buy extra batteries and swap them out if you need to. If you are carrying extra batteries with you do NOT place them loosely in your purse or pocket. If loose change or metal touches the two contact ends of the battery and shorts it out, it will explode. If you short out your car battery, it will explode. If you short out your cell phone battery, it will explode. Instead, get a silicone battery holder or battery case to store your batteries in. These can be found on just about every battery website for very cheap. Same with mods that take two or more batteries. Store your extra batteries in a battery case. Most battery websites, like IMR, will give you a free case with your battery purchase.

Another important battery safety practice is to “marry”, or pair the batteries if you are using a multi-battery device. For example, if you are using a dual 18650 mod, keep both batteries together at all times. After you charge them, don’t take one of the batteries and use it in your single battery mod. If you do, that individual battery will have more cycles on it than the other one. Both batteries in a pair, or all three batteries in a three battery mod, HAVE to stay together. You put them in the mod together and you charge them together, no exceptions. They all need to be charged and discharged at the same rate. If not, they start getting out of wack and you may have problems and issues. The mod may not work, or you could have a battery that gets deep cycled, and when you mix it with other batteries it can create problems with the other batteries. If you need to, get some battery wraps and color coordinate which batteries are married to each other so you don’t get them mixed up. Battery wraps are inexpensive and can also be found on just about every battery website. When marrying batteries you have to use the SAME TYPE of battery; same model, same brand. For example, in a two battery mod, both batteries have to be LG HT2, or VCT4, etc. Same goes for a three battery mod.

Another thing you have to watch for, when you constantly insert and remove batteries in your device, the battery wrap can start to get chipped and torn. As soon as that happens DON’T use that battery, rewrap it! You can get several different colored battery wraps at IMR which come in packs of ten for a buck. A very cheap investment that is well worth your safety. If you order batteries from IMR they even send you a ten pack of battery wraps, along with a battery case, for free. There’s no reason at all to not be safe with your batteries.

On a final note, there are some mods that have internal, non-removable lithium polymer batteries. These are different from the lithium-ion 18650 batteries that can be removed and charged. The reason internal lithium polymer batteries can’t be removed is they are more volatile than lithium-ion batteries. These types of batteries are more susceptible to failure and exploding if they are removed from the mod. Some internal battery mods have pass-through capability, meaning they can be used to vape while they are charging. Even if they have this capability DO NOT use the device while it’s charging. Most of the time, if you are going to encounter problems with a lithium polymer battery it’s going to be while it’s charging. The last thing you want is for it to explode in your face as you are taking a puff.
